this guy has obviously never sat in on a hugo schwyzer lecture. hence the ill-informed conclusion of herr schwyzer’s teaching capabilities. i’m going to hazard a guess as to why lecture-style teaching has been generally deemed ineffective: most people, professional educators or otherwise, are not dynamic oral communicators. i’ve had back-to-back morning class schedules plenty of times in my academic career. the only semester where i never fell asleep during lectures despite an early 8am to 11am class block was when i took hugo’s women’s studies and history 1a courses lumped together. wide-eyed from discussing sexual freedom all the way through the saga of enki-du. and i wasn’t the only one.

also: a student who doesn’t learn isn’t completely the fault of the teacher. the most passionate, dynamic teacher in the world can’t motivate a student who doesn’t want to be motivated. how hard is that to comprehend. entirely laying the burden of student learning on the teacher is robbing the student of the responsibility to learn. a teacher who can’t grok that concept isn’t much of a teacher.
