i’ve always thought it ridiculous that hugh grant had to publicly apologize for engaging a prostitute. now i find it equally ridiculous that there was need for edison chen to hold a massive press conference and say he’s sorry. who cares. the only people they should be apologizing to are their girlfriends and family. they were idiots who got caught doing what everyone else on the planet have been doing, can be doing, want to be doing. only difference being that they’re public figures so now people like to gossip.
an interesting side-effect is how asians are still conservative in their views on women’s lust. all the girls in the scandal are now presumably “sluts” because they’ve been photographed doing explicit sexual acts. why should it matter that they were enjoying sex with their boyfriend? again, stupid of them to agree to being photographed (have the actions of malicious gossip mags taught you nothing?!), but, in the end, it really is just two consenting legal-aged adults and a video cam. enjoying sex is not a crime. it’s a part of being human, whether you’re male or female. this whole episode just makes me shake my head. blah blah blah, people had sex, can’t we just yell at the kids for being idiots and then move on.
and ok, the hypocrisy of hk poplets who promote an ingenue rep and then get caught in a sex scandal doesn’t escape me. but why the need to promote the “sweet” persona in the first place? i blame the attractivness of the ingenue image on that skewed asian perspective of what a “good girl” should be. demure? gentle? sweet? sure why not. we’re horny too. get over it already.
